What a dream afternoon for cherry blossom engagement photos for Carolyn and David. Located a short drive from Greensboro, stands a secret location for the best cherry blossoms in the Triad. Cherry blossoms bloom for such a ridiculously short window! As early spring temperatures change, and weather patterns that shift, it can be a challenge to pinpoint peak cherry blossom season. But did we hit the jackpot this year for Carolyn and David! With trees full of bright pink and peachy blossoms overlooking a quiet pond, this hidden gem is one of my personal favorite spots in the North Carolina countryside.
I met Carolyn and David on a sunny spring afternoon as a private hayride took them to our quiet spot. Next, we headed out to the cherry blossom fields while chatting about their upcoming wedding. As we ventured through the warm pink flowers, Carolyn shared her birthday was a few days away. It was a nice a gift to get to spend time together as they enter the final stages of wedding planning. Maybe it was my imagination, but the peachy blossoms seemed to glow a little brighter each time they shared a smile and sweet touch with each other. I cannot wait to see their wedding in June!
1. Book Early
Due to the large popularity of the beautiful blooms, sessions can book up fast! It is important book cherry blossom sessions no later than February. Peak bloom is a very short window usually of less than two weeks towards mid to late March to early April. Once the blooms are gone, unfortunately they are gone until the next season. 2. Location, Fees, & Permits…..That is the Question
There are many locations around North Carolina and the surrounding states that offer gorgeous cherry blossoms. However, many locations need to be booked in advance, and require some planning. Some locations could come with required permits or fees with use of the property. But have no fear, I have worked with many different locations and can guide and assist through all necessary steps, the best locations, and any items related to permitting and/or booking.
3. Sunrise or Sunset ONLY!
It is no secret that the best time for photos are several hours before sunset and right after sunrise. To avoid crowds, it is worth for it an early wake up call. Sunrise provides a warm pink undertone to the blooms. Sunset provides a glowing yellowy orange to the blooms.
4. Have a Flexible Schedule
When you reserve your session, we will put a rough date on my calendar but be prepared that the date is likely to change. Maybe more than once! Actual peak bloom is nearly impossible to predict more than 10 days in advance, sometimes even less. So it goes without saying that selecting a date in January/February may need to shfit as peak bloom is determined by the weather each season.
4. Prepare for Possible Cold Weather
North Carolina weather is known to be cold one day and then close to 80 degrees the next in March. With that being said, be prepared to bring layers for in between locations to warm possible cold hands and feet.
5. Pack Flats & Closed Toed Shoes
I love, love, love a dressed up portrait session! Nothing makes me happier than pretty dresses or skirts with lots of movement! But you’ll want to throw a pair of easy slip on flats/flip flops/boots for in between shots. The North Carolina countryside can get muddy, and it is best to come prepared with comfy and mud free footwear.
