But I did grow up being a self proclaimed science nerd. I loved experimenting in the back yard with at home chemistry kits, was that kid that enjoyed science puns, Dexter’s Laboratory and Mrs. Frizzle, calculating molarity, and had a dream of being an Astronaut one day – something I am still hopeful for. Art was never something that came naturally either, and I was always envious of people growing up that had natural artistic abilities. Something about the sciences “just made sense” to me when other subjects or areas of life never seemed to fully fit.
Naturally, I obtained a Master’s Degree in Biotechnology & Chemistry and followed suite in a career in the sciences. As a young adult purchasing my first home, I discovered maybe I did have some artistic abilities in decorating. The world was introduced to Joanna Gaines and the warmth behind her farmhouse style, and for me comfort was found in life outside of the laboratory.
By the age of thirty, I was consumed with work. I needed a break, and found solace in traveling. I traveled to 3x foreign countries in one year completely single, and completely alone with my first intro DSLR camera in hand. A Canon Rebel T7 kit camera set I had asked for my birthday. I had never heard of manual shooting, yet alone of what aperture, ISO, or shutter speed was. And forget JPEG vs RAW haha! I would constantly change the pre-programmed settings from landscape to portrait to sport mode as my travels progressed hoping to capture something of quality. But it didn’t matter because I was hooked, and loved learning. After a few years, I upgraded to a Nikon Mirrorless Z6ii, and would find different lenses for sale to play with and learn. I started to understand manual shooting, the importance of light, and editing basics. Before I knew it, I couldn’t put my camera down and it became a staple where ever I went. I am pretty sure my dogs were beyond sick of me shooting them every single chance I got.
My professional journey with photography started while planning my wedding. Roy and I are 15 years apart in age, so to say we aren’t the normal couple is an understatement. We aren’t traditional, nor were we looking for that style of wedding. It was honestly overwhelming in the beginning to find “what was us” in a sea of traditional concepts, and shock from vendors when he was present at every single dress fitting. After much research, we discovered an industry that was open to our non-traditional wedding ideas. After our wedding, and during our honeymoon, we were hiking the famous Zion Narrows in Zion National Park in Utah. The Bottoms-Up Narrows trail is a 9.4 mile round trip hike, that for 8 miles, is purely in the Virgin River. It took us over 8 hours to complete, and at times were in waste deep water. And in that cold river while gazing at that most beautiful 1,000 foot high slot canyons, I knew I wanted something I couldn’t quite put my hand on yet. Shortly after returning home and to the real world, I made a business trip to California for work and caught a glimpse of Joanna Gaines new book “The Stories We Tell” in the airport. While on the flight home, I read ” I am in the season of my life where I can sense change on the horizon. I have a desire to take control again of the story I’m writing with my life. I didn’t know what to call it at 21. I do now”. And I knew instantly what I felt in Zion. I wanted to create an environment where others could tell their story, the way they wanted, through my photography.
So I began building a business. Who is JoLynn? She is the combination of my sassy two beautiful yorkie girls – Baya Jo & Kynser Jo, with my Southern family middle name – Lynn. Her style combines my love for warm Southern charm with modern day Sex and the City/And Just Like That vibes, with a slight quirk. She loves the outdoors that this beautiful world has created for us to explore, believes sunsets are the gateway to another world, and believes iced coffee next to a puppy in the afternoon will solve all problems. She aims to create an environment that tells your story and season of life. She believes you don’t take photographs, but you live life and capture it along the way. She is candid and goofy, and will bring that out in you in our sessions. And above all else, she will ALWAYS allow you to bring your dog.
